Add, delete and manage moderators
Published by: Tom on Wednesday 27th August 2008
- As a network administrator, you can choose to make certain members of your network 'Moderators'.
- If you choose to set groups, events or blogs to 'Require approval', moderators are able to grant or deny permission for these to be made active.
- This will be very useful when you have a large amount of submissions being made, and when you may not have time to deal with them all single handedly.
- To make a regular member a moderator, go to the 'Manage Members' section of your Admin panel, which can be accessed via the button in your sidebar, or at my.socialgo.com.

- Once inside the 'Manage Members' section, you will see a list showing all your members, any of whom you can make a moderator.

- To make a member a moderator, find them on the list and then click their box.
- Select their role by clicking on the drop-down menu where it says "Change role to...".
- Once you are happy with your changes, make sure you press the "Change" button.

- Now, when a user submits a group, event or blog and your network settings are to 'Require approval', you or any of your moderators will be able to look at, and approve or deny everything that is submitted.

Create and Manage RSS News Feeds
Published by: Tom on Sunday 24th August 2008
- On your network you have a ‘News’ tab, to which you can add your own custom news feeds. Lots of websites offer an RSS feed, which is basically some form of content transmitted by a site, which you can then add to your network. Check out http://www.feedburner.com/fb/a/feed101;jsessionid=01563D5FFE69D3CD555134F7280 for a more thorough explanation of what RSS is.
- The address for an RSS feed will look like this http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/front_page/rss.xml. You’ll notice this icon on any website that has content - whether text, audio or video - to which you can subscribe and read, watch and listen.

- To add an RSS feed to your network, go to the ‘RSS News Feed’ section of your admin centre, which can be accessed via the ‘Launch Admin’ button in your sidebar, or by going to my.socialgo.com

- Once inside the ‘RSS News Feeds’ section, you have two ways of adding a news feed. Click on ‘Add A News Feed’.
- The first method of adding a feed is to copy and paste your Feed address in to Box 1.

- Click ‘Add News Feed’ to submit your new feed, and you will see it appear in the list of existing news feeds that are below
- The second way of adding a news feed is to use the Google News Search feature. This method enables you to create your own feed by entering a keyword or phrase, which Google then uses to search ALL their news stories, and provides you with stories that contain your keyword.
- You can test what stories your keyword will result in by typing your keyword in to http://news.google.co.uk/
- To use this method, simply type your keyword's in to Box 2, and hit ‘Add News Feed’ to submit.

- You can edit the name or address of one of your feeds by simply changing the relevant part of your feed, and then hitting ‘Update Feeds’

- You can disable a feed, so that it is not displayed on your network, but it’s details remain in your ‘Existing Feeds’ list. This is useful for when you temporarily want to suspend a news feed, but do not wish to delete it fully. Simply tick the box next to ‘Disable’ and press ‘Update Feeds’
- You can delete a feed, so that it is not displayed on your network, and does not appear in your ‘Existing Feeds’ list. Simply tick the box next to ‘Delete’ and press ‘Update Feeds’

Create magazine categories
Published by: Tom on Thursday 21st August 2008
- As an admin, you can create categories for people to submit their blogs to.

- To set up a magazine category, click on the ‘Magazine categories’ button in your Admin Centre, which can be accessed via the ‘Launch Admin’ button in your sidebar, or by going to my.socialgo.com.

- Click on the ‘Add A Category’ button

- Enter a category name
- You can choose whether you wish your new category to be available to all users, or just to moderators and administrators. If you wish to have a section of the magazine where only the admins/moderators can post blogs, it’s a good idea to set up a category just for these users, for instance for ‘Network News’.
- To make the ‘Open to Members’ choice, select the ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ button.
- To save your settings, press ‘Update Categories’

- You can edit or delete blogs in the ‘Existing Blog Categories’ list in the ‘Magazine Categories’ menu
- To edit a category, simply change the details you wish to alter, and then click ‘Update Categories’
- To delete a category, click the ‘Delete’ box next to the relevant category, followed by the ‘Update Categories’ button. Please note you cannot retrieve deleted categories!
- Once you have set all of your magazine categories, you and your users will be able to select them from the drop down menu whilst creating a blog!

Network Updates - 16th Aug
Published by: Alex H on Friday 15th August 2008
We have been busy dealing with feedback from our BETA networks and we are thrilled with the response we have had so far. We are moving into open BETA soon and are working hard to ready outselves for that.
We pushed an update today to the networks which includes :
- A revised forum. One piece of feedback which came from of our owners' was regarding the forum both from an aethetic and functionality point of view. We have spent the past week working on these and have pushed an update to all networks today which will give you new forum functionality.
- You can now differentiate between summary and full view in blog posts by pressing the little Page Break icon. It is the last icon in the second row on the blog edit screen.
- Notifications now display correctly in Profile and Notification inbox view.
- The search engine has been upgraded to include more content types. This will continue to be improved in coming months.
- Members now have individual RSS feeds which other members can subscribe to.
- The public activity on the homepage is now available an RSS feed on all networks.
- Several tweaks have been made to the network design template. In order to take advantage of this, you will need to login to the admin center and re-submit your design. (They are not major so this is completley optional)
- We now support WMV format video files.
- + 100's of other little tweaks.....
As we are still in BETA we still very much rely on your feedback so keep it coming. We are also on Twitter now so please follow us -> http://www.twitter.com/socialgo
If you are interested in trying out the API then message me through here.
