How to set up a custom domain.

Published by: Tom on Tuesday 27th January 2009 12:01pm
      1. Purchase a domain name. Make sure you have registered the domain name with a registrar that offers custom DNS services.

      2. Every domain registrar is different in the way they are laid out, but, all will have a field for the following information, which you need to enter in to the relevant fields when logged in your domain registrar's website:

For your domain, you need the A name (e.g. yourdomainname.com) pointing to 92.60.117.57

You need the www CNAME pointing to yourdomainname.com (type in the domain name there without the w’s)

In tabular form for yourdomainname.com it’ll look like:

      yourdomainname.com A 92.60.117.57
      www CNAME yourdomainname.com

      3. Once you have changed your settings, go to your SocialGO admin center and click on 'Network details'

      4. Enter the name of the domain you have purchased in to the domain field.

      5. Hit 'Save changes' at the bottom of the page

      Pic

      6. Wait. Domain changes may take up to 72 hours to take effect.

      7. You can check the status of your domain by clicking the button labelled 'Check domain'

      8. If the domain is set up correctly, you will get this message:

If you do not see the above message, then please check you have entered all of the data correctly, or contact your domain registrar.

      Foreign Language on SocialGO.com

Published by: Ross C on Friday 23rd January 2009 12:01pm

      Hi All,

This blog is aimed at the Foreign Language Network Owners of SocialGO.com who have put the time and effort into customising the language of their site.

Firstly, the changes you have previously made to your languages are safe and I recommend that you always "Export" (e) a copy of any changes you make as a backup.

Due to the high load of recent weeks, your custom language settings had to be disabled. This was to ensure quality of service and allow us a bit of time (amongst the many other things); to establish a plan for SocialGO.com languages.

For current SocialGO.com Foreign Language Network Owners, who have already modified their language settings:

      1. Export (e) a copy of your current language settings.
      2. Select your language from the drop-down (a) on the import language page; and click "Change Default Language" (b) - fig 1.0.
      3. Check your site; it should now be using your original language values.
      4. Delete the old export on your computer that you made at 1) and export the Updated settings for your records again.

For New SocialGO.com Foreign Language Network Owners:

      1. Select your language from the drop-down (a) on the import language page; and click "Change Default Language" (b) - fig 1.0.
      2. Search for the text you want to change back on the main language page and update the values. These changes should be visible on your network.

Important note: We are currently trying to get more sections "Internationalised" and will let you know when new text values can be modified via this blog.

      Monday's Video Update

Published by: Alex H on Monday 19th January 2009 07:01am
      Hi guys,

Today we updated our video processor and videos have begun processing again. This is intermediary step between now and this Friday's release so there are still a few problems :

      a) Certain video formats are not encoding properly. 3GP are turning into very short videos, sometimes 1 second in length. This represents about 8% of videos on networks. If you find these videos on your network, please delete them.

      b) Thumbnails are not appearing. They will retrospectively appear in this Friday's release so you can either upload one now or wait until Friday.

There is still a larger update happening this Friday which will see many major issues fixed including search, language, custom content page problems and of course video.

We realize video has been less than great during the past few weeks and appreciate you and your members patience during this time.

      Cheers
      Alex :)

      Video on your networks

Published by: Alex H on Sunday 18th January 2009 06:01am
Hi guys. We are well aware that there are continuing problems with video on your networks. Rightly or wrongly, we have been surprised at the volume of video that has been added to SocialGO networks in the past month. We have known for a while that the current cue system in the platform is not up to the task. As a result the cue has stoped processing, is slow and unreliable. So here is what will be happening over the next 10 days.

      a) Videos being uploaded now are currently being backed up for processing by the existing system which we continue to try and make work, and will start to appear on networks from Midday tomorrow GMT. We realize this is totally unacceptable and appreciate your patience.
      b) In the next release which will be out this week we will be implementing a brand new video system that has been developed over the past few weeks. This will be faster, better quality and more reliable. It will fix the following issues :
      a) Fix the Vista IO error issue for large file uploads for good.
      b) Stop the 'fast video' encoding problem
      c) Provide quick video encoding turn around
      d) Increase video quality
      e) Increase stream speed
      f) Lay the groundwork for customization of player for network owners
      g) Increase the supported formats

This will be part of the next release which is currently scheduled for Friday 23rd January (This Friday!). It is currently being stress tested to ensure that things work well on release day.

There are some websites whose code is not embedding properly in SocialGO. As i have posted in other threads on this topic, please email the embed code examples to alex@socialgo.com so we can test it and diagnose it. All major sharing sites work fine so we need your help to find those that are not working with the system.

Just a final note to say that we appreciate your patience as we knock down these problems and get the platform up to scratch.

      SocialGO BETA Progress

Published by: Alex H on Saturday 17th January 2009 02:01am
The SocialGO team has been working hard to get the system ready to come out of BETA. Yesterday we pushed a release which fixed up the following issues :

      1. Online members now displays properly. People will be taken offline if they are inactive for 3 minutes.
      2. Upgrade to the chat system which was denying connections in some browsers
      3. The first in a 2 part fix for Windows Vista customers who where having problems uploading to our servers. More on this later....
      4. Owners can now edit and remove blogs
      5. Birthdays are now displaying correctly on peoples profiles
      6. 18+ Networks splash pages now allow them access directly to sub-pages without taking them back to the homepage
      7. Magazine articles now appear straight away in the Magazine
      8. The Birthday widget has been fixed
      9. Removed photos will now be ignored from the custom avatar folder
      10. Setting your profile photo for groups and events has been made more reliable
      11. A bug with inviting friends to join an event or group has been fixed
      12. A bug with inviting friends to join a network has been fixed
      13. Several other issues as mentioned elsewhere...

So that is a few things ticked off the list. We have also made some big under the bonnet changes to the platform to improve speed at peek times and are preparing for a doubling of our infrastructure over the next few weeks.

So smoke is already pouring our of the team's keyboards here in Shoreditch, working on the next release which is coming out end of next week which will see a number of issues resolved including -

      1. Reinstating the Message All Members feature from the admin system
      2. A replacement video system which will offer higher quality and faster streaming for all users. Vista users will see much faster uploads too for both Videos and Photos as a result
      3. Search will be made available to all networks again
      4. The network owner will be able to approve members from the members section. (Currently it can be done from the admin system only)
      5. & quite a few more as well! TBA

Releases are being pushed weekly now and we will be communicating with people about which issues they can expect from each release at a minimum.

You can expect to see a rapid improvement of your service over the next few weeks as we push updates and scale infrastructure. Thanks for all of your feedback, comments and support during this phase. We understand that many network owners have had a difficult time in the past few weeks and rest assured that we are committed to making SocialGO the perfect home for your online community.

      Alex
